January 26, 2023 (Edmonton Metropolitan Region) — Edmonton Global (representing Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub) and Chungnam Techno Park (representing Chungnam Hydrogen National Innovation Cluster) announced a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on December 30, 2022. The agreement will enhance the growth, commercialization, and adoption of the respective hydrogen clusters and hub in the Chungnam region of South Korea and the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.

Chungnam Techno Park and Edmonton Global agreed to collaboratively promote initiatives that will help strengthen the hydrogen value chains within each region and to foster trade and investment opportunities between each region. Areas of collaboration will include hydrogen production, storage, transport, and use of hydrogen technologies. The two organizations agreed to work on stimulating their respective hydrogen hub capacity and co-participate in conferences and business missions within each region. They will also work to identify hydrogen industry issues between Canada and South Korea as well foster networking opportunities between the partners of each region’s hydrogen ecosystem in an effort to overcome potential obstacles.

“The Edmonton Metropolitan Region is the driving force behind Canada’s hydrogen economy. We produce over 60% of Canada’s hydrogen and are leading the way to become a global hydrogen superpower. Alongside South Korea’s ambitious hydrogen energy goals, this partnership will put our countries at the forefront of the global hydrogen economy. As national carbon regulations make hydrogen more competitive, we foresee a stronger demand from large long-haul trucks and busses to convert to hydrogen energy. Together, we will work to expand clean hydrogen capacity at an impressive rate in our regions to meet aggressive targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  This is an extremely advantageous partnership for the Edmonton region, and we look forward to collaborating with Chungnam Techno Park to exponentially grow this sector.”

Malcolm Bruce, CEO of Edmonton Global

“Our partnership with Edmonton Global is a significant step towards realizing our hydrogen energy goals in South Korea. Together, we will work towards strengthening the hydrogen value chains in both our regions and foster trade and investment opportunities. This collaboration will put us at the forefront of the global hydrogen economy.  We look forward to working with Edmonton Global on this ambitious endeavour.”
