A Canadian team has not won a Stanley Cup Final for over 32 years. For the first time since 2006, the Edmonton Oilers have clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals and are squaring off against the Florida Panthers. Hockey fans from all over of the world are cheering for their favourite NHL team and all eyes will be on the Edmonton region. Today, we’re sharing 10 reasons why the Edmonton region is one of the best places in North America to hosting the Stanley Cup Finals.

  1. Championing the underdogs – Early in the season, the Oilers were not performing well and were considered underdogs. However, after a major comeback with winning 16 consecutive games, the Oilers have worked hard to earn their spot.
  2. Historical significance – A Canadian NHL team has not won the Stanley Cup in 32 years. The Edmonton Oilers ‘championship drought since 1990 adds to the excitement of making it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Hockey legends that have played on the roster like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier have deep connections to the Edmonton region, adding to the historical significance of the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals.
  3. Passionate hockey community – The passionate fan base has eagerly awaited this chance for a long time coming. The unwavering support from across the region creates an electric atmosphere during gamedays, making it an unforgettable experience for fans. Fans show their pride by proudly wearing the team’s blue and orange colours, decking out their vehicles, even making the journey all the way to Florida to watch the Oilers play!
  4. An economic ripple – With its high wages and low cost of living, people who live in the Edmonton region enjoy a relatively high amount of disposable income – meaning they have money to spend on purchasing tickets to the games, spending at local businesses including restaurants and bars, and purchasing 50/50 tickets.  On a playoff game night, it’s anywhere from a 25% to 150% spike in spending on local businesses and restaurants on those nights relative to non-game nights.
  5. State-of-the-art arenaRogers Place is in the heart of ICE District, downtown Edmonton’s central hub for entertainment and nightlife. Its modern design provides an exceptional fan experience. Fun fact: it was also one of the locations chosen for the NHL covid bubble in 2020.
  6. Warm hospitality – Visitors from across the world are welcomed with open arms, ensuring a friendly and memorable experience. An NHL survey found that Edmonton Oilers fans are some of the kindest across the league – well, unless you’re wearing a Panthers jersey.
  7. Cultural diversity – The region’s multicultural identity enriches this event, creating a cultural mosaic of cultures. The Edmonton region ranks among the most attractive jurisdictions in Canada for newcomers and has the highest immigrant retention rates across other Canadian metropolitan regions.
  8. Fan festivities – Street parties, concerts, and celebrations bring fans together, fostering camaraderie and excitement. The newly introduced outdoor Fan parks offer a great space for Oilers fans to gather and create an electric atmosphere.
  9. Proven track recordEdmonton has successfully hosted numerous large-scale sporting events, including the NHL playoffs, the IIHF World Junior Championships, and the Commonwealth Games. This experience ensures seamless organization and execution of the NHL Finals.
  10. Community supportThe region’s community spirit and enthusiasm for hockey extend beyond the arena. Local businesses, volunteers, and residents actively participate in hosting events, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere for visitors. In fact, the Edmonton region enjoys some of the highest rates of volunteerism across Canada.
