The Edmonton Region combines a university ranked 3rd globally in AI research, accessible health datasets from 4.5 million people, world-class medical infrastructure, and a thriving R&D ecosystem.
Technology and innovation in Health AI have the capacity to solve healthcare challenges including preventative medicine, early detection/diagnosis, medically complex scenarios and treatment planning. Countries are also looking for solutions to address health spending and new ways to support ageing populations.
In the Edmonton Region, you’ll find top AI researchers, a robust ecosystem to collaborate, and incentives to help fund the next generation of Health AI.
The Edmonton Region is part of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy and is home to the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Amii has been collaborating with Alberta Health Services— Canada’s largest single healthcare system— since 2015 to integrate AI and health in hospital and research settings.
The Government of Canada provides a number of perks, including an investment tax credit ranging from 15% to 35% for scientific research and experimental development opportunities, and the $1.26 billion Government of Canada Strategic Innovation Fund for large R&D and commercialization projects across all industries.
The Government of Alberta’s Innovation Employment Grant will support businesses that invest in R&D with a grant worth up to 20% of qualifying expenditures.
Canada’s regulatory structure for AI is also significantly more permissive than most OECD countries, which means products can be developed and tested in Canada prior to being released in the global market.
“…we have the intellectual power to train the people who can take on complex AI challenges in the future” – Dr. Daniel Baumgart, Professor University of Alberta Department of Medicine
