SEPTEMBER 10, 2024 [Edmonton Metropolitan Region] — Today, at the Carbon Capture Canada conference held annually in the Edmonton Region, Varme Energy and the Alberta Government announced that Varme has been granted $2.6 million in funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta to lead a $6.1 million front-end engineering and design study — another big step towards the company’s plans to construct the first large-scale waste-to-energy facility with integrated carbon capture and storage in Canada.

The study is expected to be completed in December 2024 with construction of the facility set to begin in 2025. The facility aims to process over 200,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, capturing over 1 million tonnes of CO2 over the facility’s lifespan. The project represents a major economic opportunity for the Edmonton Region, highlighting its potential as a world leader in clean technology and decarbonization.

Last June, Varme Energy announced its partnership with Canada Growth Fund and Gibson Energy to advance the project in the Region. With funding backed by Canada Growth Fund, this agreement is one of the largest in Canadian history and is a first-of-its-kind for the Edmonton Region.
