Tomorrow’s global leaders in hydrogen to compete in 2024 Global Hydrogen Case Competition finals

March 11, 2024 [Edmonton Metropolitan Region]—Nineteen post-secondary students from around the world will be traveling to the Edmonton Region to compete in the Global Hydrogen Case Competition finals during the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention in April. Five teams, made up of undergraduate students from a range of disciplines, will present their strategic solutions at North America’s largest hydrogen conference, with one team walking away from the Awards Gala with a $10,000 CAD grand prize.

This year’s competition has attracted applications from students around the world, including representation from 16 countries.  Students from Canada, Malaysia, India, Chile, France, Argentina, Pakistan, Kenya, South Africa, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, Nigeria, Italy, Peru, and Indonesia participated in the preliminary round, with five teams advancing to the finals. The finalists will showcase their problem-solving skills in front of a judging panel made up of industry leaders and experts in Canada’s hydrogen economy.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event which focused on attracting teams from across Alberta, this year, the University of Alberta’s Interdisciplinary Consulting Association (ICA), has expanded the competition into an international contest.

“Having been part of the inaugural Canadian Hydrogen Case Competition last year, I am excited to witness its growth into the Global Hydrogen Case Competition,” said Emaad Hussain, President of the Interdisciplinary Consulting Association. “It’s inspiring to see the level of interest and engagement from students worldwide in tackling the challenges of the hydrogen economy. I look forward to the innovative solutions that will be presented this year.”

This competition will be an immersive experience, and thanks to the support from sponsors like Air Liquide (the competition’s platinum sponsor), Apex Utilities, Deloitte, RBC, Qualico, Alberta Industrial Heartland, MacEwan University, and Linde Canada, finalists will have the opportunity to attend the 2024 Canadian Hydrogen Convention and experience the Edmonton Region in person. Finalists will benefit from valuable exposure and career growth opportunities throughout the competition.

“The 2024 Global Hydrogen Case Competition is a great opportunity for students to be a part of driving sustainable energy solutions forward,” said Malcolm Bruce, CEO of Edmonton Global. “ This competition was a highlight of last year’s convention. It showcases the commitment of young leaders to align behind a vision for a sustainable and prosperous future, not just for our Region, but for Canada, and the world. As a global leader in clean hydrogen production, we’re proud to be hosting this international talent in our region and look forward to the positive contributions they will surely make in meeting our collective net-zero goals.”
