Adam White, PhD  | Assistant Professor, University of Alberta | Research Scientist, DeepMind

Adam White is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computing Sciences at the University of Alberta and a Research Scientist at DeepMind.

DeepMind chose Edmonton to set up its first international research lab outside of the UK. DeepMind is a world leader in artificial intelligence research, focusing on how technology can make a positive impact. Backed by some of the most successful technology entrepreneurs in the world, DeepMind is using AI to solve complex problems like climate change, while looking at solutions for daily challenges in fields like healthcare.





Anna Koop | Managing Director of Applied Science, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii)

Anna Koop is Amii’s Managing Director of Science. Having worked closely with Dr. Richard Sutton on experience-based knowledge representation, her research now focuses on machine learning in changing environments. Anna also spends her time as a lab scientist at the Creative Destruction Lab (Rockies), and is the co-founder of Ada’s Team – a group dedicated to promoting diversity in computing, technology and games at the University of Alberta’s Computing Science department. Anna believes in applying a broad range of perspectives to ML problems, and brings to Amii a passion for debate, education and accessible science.

Amii is one of three national hubs that make up Canada’s AI strategy and has close ties to the University of Alberta – ranked in the global top 5 for AI research.

Amii supports cutting edge research and leverages scientific advancement into industry adoption – creating an integrated system that allows research and industry to thrive. Amii works closely with some of the world’s largest companies and helps them develop and implement AI and ML into their products and processes. They have ongoing partnerships with Toyota, Volkswagen, Microsoft, Google Brain, DeepMind, and many others. They also partner with startups and small to medium enterprises to support their needs as they explore and drive AI/ML adoption within their organizations. This provides a variety of soft landings for international firms looking to found AI teams in the Edmonton region.

Naseem Bashir, P.Eng., ICD.D. | President & CEO, Williams Engineering Canada | Board Chair, Innovate Edmonton

Naseem is the President and CEO of Williams Engineering Canada and Chairman of the Board for the Williams Group of Companies. He is also the recently appointed Board Chair for the newly formed Innovate Edmonton.

Williams Engineering is an industry leader in multi-discipline engineering consulting solutions. They have partnered with AltaML, an applied artificial intelligence and machine learning product company, also based in Edmonton, to build ML applications for the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry.

Naseem will share some of the successes that Williams Engineering has experienced through AI adoption and how these tools have the capacity to positively impact the AEC industry and other professional service organizations.

Ryan Walker | Director of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, TELUS

Ryan is the Director of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer of Telus. He is a thought leader that drives strategic partnerships through grassroots innovation. His primary focus is on early development opportunities around 5G and Smart X, that pulls on his extensive engineering and military background. Ryan’s key areas of expertise are video, analytics, Internet of Things and 5G that can be seen through his successful collaborations with law enforcement and all levels of government.

TELUS is a world leading communications and information technology company with $14.8 in annual revenue serving 15.3 million customers. TELUS has committed to spending $40 billion over the next three years to support the roll out of its 5G network across Canada which will enhance innovation and help drive digital development across industries in a new age of connectedness.

Brent Jensen – Moderator | Senior Business Manager, Business Development Edmonton Global

With a long background in international business, Brent is a mandarin speaker who has a wealth of experience ranging from supply chain and wine logistics, to corporate training and facilitation. A University of Alberta alumni and current senate member, he is a natural networker and his strengths lie in identifying business opportunities both locally and abroad.
