April 25, 2022 (Edmonton Metropolitan Region) – The largest hydrogen conference in North America kicks off a three-day event in Edmonton on April 26. The event is co-hosted by Edmonton Global and is expected to have a total economic impact of $3.5 million on the Edmonton Metropolitan Region including direct and induced benefits.

The Canadian Hydrogen Convention will be the largest hydrogen show to take place in North America with 3000 – 4000 expected attendees including international delegations from at least 19 different countries. The event will provide a platform for 1,000 representatives from various organizations and 100 exhibitors. The convention will welcome key energy stakeholders to discuss and showcase innovations and solutions for low-carbon hydrogen production, energy infrastructure, and using hydrogen as an enabler to reach Canada’s net-zero targets by 2050.

The sold-out Strategic Conference invites experts to analyze the challenges the industry is currently facing, and the solutions available to bring awareness to hydrogen in transforming Canada’s energy sector. Attendees will hear from a notable lineup of speakers including Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources; Premier Jason Kenney; Grand Chief George Arcand Jr.; Amarjeet Sohi, Mayor of Edmonton, Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor of Sturgeon County and Chair of the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub and Seifi Ghasemi, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Air Products. Air Products has invested $1.3 billion in the Edmonton region to build the world’s largest net-zero hydrogen facility.

April 27 will also mark the first Canadian Hydrogen Awards, recognizing excellence in the hydrogen industry and honouring leaders, innovators, and trailblazers who actively promote healthy advancements in the sector. Air Products and local tech company RWI Synthetics are two of the nominees for awards. The event will round off on April 28 with tours of hydrogen related projects in the Edmonton region hosted by Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.

“As a community that has supplied global markets with energy projects for the last 50 years, Edmonton is proud to host this important event. The City of Edmonton’s transition strategy includes ambitious targets and to reach those goals, we’re investing in becoming a lead supplier of low-carbon energy products like hydrogen. We’re pleased to host so many industry experts in our city this week.” Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, Mayor, City of Edmonton

“The Canadian Hydrogen Convention signals to the world that Alberta and Canada are ready. As Canada transitions to a low-carbon economy, our future is linked globally. This conference will showcase how we are working together to seize this opportunity and promote the energy evolution in the Edmonton Region.” Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor of Sturgeon County and Chair , Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub

“As a planned annual conference, the Canadian Hydrogen Convention will become a longstanding event, demonstrating the significant interest there is in Edmonton, and Canada more broadly, in hydrogen and related technologies. As the economic development organization representing the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, Edmonton Global is pleased to be co-hosting this important event. Energy has long been the backbone of the Edmonton economy, and we are excited about the opportunity that hydrogen represents for our region to continue to lead in providing sustainable energy solutions for Canada and beyond.” – Malcolm Bruce, CEO, Edmonton Global

The Edmonton region is positioned to become a leading global producer of clean hydrogen due to its skilled labour force and strategic energy assets. A clean hydrogen economy can diversify the Canada’s future energy mix while generating economic benefits. With hydrogen supply more accessible than demand end uses, establishing reliable sources of hydrogen demand will be key to unlocking a hydrogen economy in Canada.
