Shareholder Group chooses new Chair, Vice-Chair for Edmonton Global
November 17, 2017
At their first post-election meeting, the Shareholders of the region’s new economic development company, Edmonton Global, have chosen Mayor Stuart Houston of Spruce Grove as Chair and Mayor Gale Katchur of Fort Saskatchewan as Vice Chair.
Edmonton Global is the first fully regional economic development company for the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, incorporated June 9, 2017 with 15 regional municipal Shareholders. The Shareholder Group appointed a Board of Directors in September and, following the municipal elections last month, reconvened to begin the new term with new leadership.
Mayor Houston and Mayor Katchur were both re-elected October 16 and are committed to ensuring the Edmonton Global Board is well positioned to take the Edmonton Metro Region to the next level of global competitiveness.
Board Chair John Day says Edmonton Global is currently completing the search for a CEO and is already in discussions on strategic planning to jumpstart appropriate staffing, research, and activity in the new year. The target date to be fully operational is July 1, 2018.
Edmonton Global’s goal is to attract investment and jobs to the Edmonton Metro Region by developing a regional brand, a regional database, and a strategic plan to ensure the Region takes its rightful place amongst ~300 comparable world communities.
The Edmonton Metropolitan Region is 1.3 million people, with 725,000 jobs and about 30% of the provincial GDP. It is projected to double in size in 30 years.
